LEGENDARY CRAWFORD HIGH ALUMNUS PASSES AWAY

By Victor M. Perez
  Class of 1971

Hollis Gentry III
1954 – 2006
Hollis Gentry III, Crawford High School Graduate of the Class of 1972 died Tuesday, September 5th, 2006. He was 51 years old at the time of his passing. A well know local hero in the San Diego Music Scene, Hollis was a recording artists and the co-founder of the jazz group Fattburger. I will remember him not as the talented man with the saxophone, but rather as the young teenager of my youth. Who with a very small group played during half-time at the football games. It was my Senior year in 1971 that Hollis, as a Junior, always rocked the house with his performance! I can see him still in my minds-eye, remaining forever young and bursting with talent. Hollis left all of us richer for having experience him! Hollis died of Respiratory Distress Metastatic Lung Cancer. The Obituaries in the Thursday, September 7th, 2006 issue of The San Diego Union-Tribune in the San Diego Section on page B7 has his story. To read the story online go to SignOnSanDiego, the Union-Tribune web site, and access them at: www.uniontrib.com. Look in the archive banner under “Hollis Gentry III, 51; San Diego saxophone legend”. It was some amazing service for Hollis, 2 hours if you didn’t go to the internment at Mount Hope Cemetery. For more about Hollis and the service you can read about it in The San Diego Union-Tribune. Go to the San Diego Section for Saturday, September 16th, 2006, and find on the top of page B1 you will see a banner that reads: “HOLLIS GENTRY III: Hundreds gather to pay respects to jazz saxophonist”. Then go look at page B2, on the top of the page you will see another banner which reads: “Service celebrates Gentry’s muse”, and just below it the story starts with one more banner which reads: “Saxophonist was one of the greats”.

You will find this write-up about the Friday, September 15th, 2006, service informative, it was written by U-T staff writer Elizabeth Fitzsimons. The story is a good follow-up and includes quotes form various people. The story even has a statement from Gunar Biggs, Crawford Grad, and Class of ’71. I only have one issue with the story; the reporter felt that the memorial had more than 700 people in attendance; as a participant at the funeral service… I think it was closer to 900 plus people.
